PFAS Update: Wisconsin & PFAS

The Wisconsin Watch pinpoints a move by Wisconsin that goes against what we know about environmental justice and our responsibility to uphold in. Wisconsin is shipping 38,500 gallons of PFAS-containing firefighting foam to a small Alabama town. The landfill there is surrounded by predominantly black communities and the town is small enough that it lacks the resources to push back on this move. The task of tackling PFAS disposal is daunting but shifting the burden from a northern city to a small southern one with less resources and infrastructure does not sound like a responsible or sustainable option. Different people, not in the state that produced the waste, will be at risk and the town is small enough that it doesn’t seem as if anyone is able to say no. In this case, a racial issue was raised but imagine if this were repeated around the nation with small towns, lacking pushback power taking the brunt of the hit while producing less waste than everyone else. Unacceptable. Read more on this story in the Wisconsin Watch.
