Incandescence Is Out? Brilliant!

This week the Biden administration has made a historic move to phase out incandescent lightbulbs in the US. This reverses a Trump administration policy that some say illegally halted this move in place several years ago with the justification that there was no economic justification for the phase out. In contrast, the Biden administration estimated that consumers will collectively save $3 billion dollars on their electric bills. LEDs outlast incandescent bulbs by 50 to 100 times. An incandescent lightbulb will typically have a lifespan of about 1,200 hours while a similar LED bulb will last 50,000 to 100,000 hours or more. Additionally, LED are more efficient, using less energy to generate the same amount of light which is the main way they will ultimately save consumers money on their electric bill. Another big picture advantage is that over the next 30 years, this move will slash the nations carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons. That’s equal to the emissions of 48,260,869 cars in one year or the annual emissions of 29,600,000 US homes.

Below we’ve linked a brief video by CNBC detailing the development of the lgihtbulb. LED lights are the newest and most efficient means of light a space we’ve implemented to date. They are becoming increasingly inexpensive and this shift will tie well into our current shift towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. What do you think of this shift?
