If you grew up in the 90s, you might have memories of working the microwave in your house into an early grave. It was what I think of as a microwave heavy decade, where the pace of life made homecooked meals even more difficult to make time for. Microwave dinners and casserole nuking became the purview of many an American home. You may have thought, at the time, that a device that could melt some plastic might not be the best place for things like Styrofoam or solo cups. Or, like many, you may not have given it a second thought. Now, however, we are learning exactly what we are exposing our food to, by heating certain materials in the microwave.
